PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
The Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice programme involves investigating the nature of crime and criminality and the study of society’s response through the criminal justice system. Students will explore how societies attempt the control and punishment of crimes and disorders and gain a theoretical and practical understanding of this intriguing subject.

Criminology uses a social sciences approach to study and classify crime and explores theories around criminal behaviour. Students will also learn how society deals with criminal behaviour when they study institutions such as the police, courts, prisons, and probation service and their roles.

Students will have a range of options in the final year when they will be expected to undertake independent research on a relevant topic of interest.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

Criminology is the interdisciplinary study of crime and deviant behavior 

By the end of the programme students should be able to: 

  1. Analyze the nature of crime and impact of criminal behavior on public safety. 
  2. Evaluate and apply career skills to Practicum experiences in the areas of criminology, law enforcement, court systems, and correctional services.
  3. Analyze the philosophy, functions, and roles of institutional incarceration
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of diversion, treatment courts, and community-based corrections.
  5. Evaluate the role of ethics, political, and corporate power on the criminal justice system.
  6. Conduct a research project using core concepts from criminological theory, creating appropriate research questions, methodology, and analysis to draw valid, ethical, empirically-based conclusions.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates in the BSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice programme will master the essential skills necessary to pursue careers in the following areas:

  • Law enforcement
  • Private investigation,
  • National Security,
  • Correctional Service.
  • The Courts

 

DURATION
UCC Bachelor of Science degree programmes are four-year programmes. This may be reduced by up to two years, if a student gains Advanced Standing with an appropriate Associate of Science degree or equivalent qualification.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR JAMAICAN STUDENTS

To be unconditionally admitted into UCC undergraduate programmes, applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) subjects at the GCE or CSEC level (including mandatory English Language and Mathematics) at grades A, B, C or 1, 2, 3 respectively. A CSEC Grade 3 must have been obtained since 1998.

Candidates with four (4) CXCs may apply pending outstanding subjects or may opt to complete UCC replacement courses: Core Mathematics, English for Academic Purposes, and Fundamentals of Accounting.

Applicants may apply under the Mature Entry option. Candidates must be at least 25 years old with a minimum of five (5) years of work experience. Academic qualifications, résumé, job letter, and three professional references are required.
HONOURS PROGRAMME
Students with eight (8) CXC/GCE subjects including Mathematics and English Language at Grade 1 may qualify for a 25% tuition waiver during the first year.
